10 years later in 1 hour

Seated behind is a gorgeous queen, seated before her is this little hustler boy, between the two is a tension filled vacuum. This meant no looking behind for the whole lecture but a man being a man, you have to steal glances and each time you do, your eyes meet and you have to cook a story like, "do you have an extra pen? and as if reading your mind, she is there staring deep into your eyes with a killer smile and always ready with an answer for whatever story is cooked up. Was she some magician, some goddess? or perhaps a fortune teller?

Vuruta Stool Niwape Udaku.

Life is full of good and bad people, life is always a mystery. So you walk to your hostel that evening and the only thing that is in your mind is how the gods had decided its your turn to enjoy the good things of life.  No sleep that night, "you can't sleep when the gods have decided to bless you" How do you sleep when the world had decided it's your time to have "Angelina Jolie" by your side?" You tell me, its only a fool who would fall asleep on such a night after such an encounter. so the whole night is spent on strategic planning on how to handle things in the lecture halls. You promise yourself I will be more attentive, ignore her presence completely and commit myself to what brought me here.

So the early bird is up quick shower, quick breakfast off you are to the lecture halls. The plan is, you look for a strategic position where the two of you don't have to meet and you avoid distractions on your pathway to glory (We were told/lied to that education is key to success). I decided I will pursue this glory, give my best bet to education now and enjoy the glory later. Some of the resolutions I made included always on time for my lectures, Library was my second buddy and all assignments completed on time. That's why this morning I was on my way to the lecture halls, very focused and already seeing myself in a PhD graduation gown.

So I pass by a canteen and get some PK chewing gums, I was told chewing gums make you active and alert. My friend, I was going to do anything to enjoy the future glory. So I run up the stairs armed with my notebook and pen, very confident of myself. You know those upstairs and down stairs runs CEOs and Presidents make when cameras are focused on them to cut an image of a time conscious individual? Yeah those are the runs I was making this morning. Now already entering into my lecture halls, thank God no one was in, my plan works perfectly well. I choose to seat at the very front of the lecture hall, I had only sat down for a while, now saying my prayer before I begin my classes (Mom had taught me to always pray each morning) Immediately I say Amen, she was there in front me joining in my Amen.

Few minutes glancing at one another, all while smiling at me. On the other hand I was frozen like a small kid who had broken a glass and her mom is busy looking at him deciding between a belt and "red sleepers" which one she was going to use to discipline the boy (I love the African Moms). Hey, want some chocolate? I was startled from my thoughts "Yes, thank you so much" by now, believe you me I was seeing myself as Brad Pitt.

Yes, that is how I met this gorgeous lady who taught me so much about friendship, life and inspired
me so much. One of the greatest lessons I ever learnt from her was "Living for a moment" and "Sacrificing now for a greater tomorrow" powerful lessons that have contributed much to whom I have become.

Almost 10 years down the line after life made us take separate decisions that involved change of institutions and lose of communication, I receive a call from a close friend of us, after chatting for awhile and catching up, she breaks the news to me "Vio amekuwa diagnosed na breast Cancer" Now that was disheartening.

Later on I receive a text from her affirming the same. So I am torn between replying the text or placing a call. It's not easy to make a 10 year old call not in this situation and absolutely not now. Like, will you be catching up or will you be encouraging her or will you be spending the better part of the call pitting her? It's a tricky state of affairs here, not when cancer is involved friends and absolutely not when this person is supposed to be flown out of the country for treatment, absolutely no!

But you make the call anyway, and she responds with your maiden name very jovial and seemingly very strong. So you talk about everything, 10 years summarized in 1 hour. I asked, how is you, she notices that I finding difficult on how to handle the call and typical of her she says "You would make me happier and stronger if we had a normal talk" "My biggest hurt would be seeing my family and friends struggling hard on my behalf," I have cried, been stressed asked myself thousands of questions and I decided to let things handle themselves.

Friends, handling cancer is not a joke. Not when you need a whooping Two Million Kenyan shillings (Ksh. 2,000,000). It's not easy, it can never be easy. Violet may not be known to you, but she is an innocent beautiful Kenyan Lady who needs to fight the cancer cells before they spread across her body. It's a difficult time for her family, when cancer sets in, and you need to spend 2 Million shillings, friends that destabilizes your entire family.

Please join #VioletKiambiMedicalAppeal to help her raise the money in time for her treatment in India earlier next month.

THE THOMAS SANKARA STORY - AFRICA'S CHE GUEVARA

In the early hours of a night in 1987, one of Africa’s youngest leaders, President Thomas Sankara, was murdered and quietly and quickly buried in a shallow grave. He was only 37 years old.  But first who is Thomas Sankara?  Born Thomas Isidore Noël Sankara on 21 December 1949 in Yako French Upper Volta. He met Adama Touré, the academy's director who taught history and geography and was known for having progressive ideas. Adama Toure invited a few of his brightest and more political students, among them Sankara, to join informal discussions about imperialism, neocolonialism, socialism, and communism, the Sovie...
