KAMPALA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL UGANDA

KAMPALA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF UGANDA: A school where children flourish....all of them! THE VISION: “to educate today’s children for tomorrow’s world”

Popularly known as KISU, was established in 1993 as Kabira International School with 67 students. The school has since grown, sits on 14 acres piece of land in Kampala, and it currently accommodates about 460 students from 60 nationalities though it has a capacity of 1000 students.
It offers an international education to students between 2 and 19 years of age. The school is privately owned with an Advisory Board of Governors and the day to day running of the school is managed by the Director.

Students participate in an extensive range of extracurricular activities including outdoor education and overseas trips, to diverse destinations such as The UK, France, Italy, Mount Kilimanjaro, and a yearly ski trip in Europe. The holistic education also fosters involvement in community-building activities.

Message from the Director
A great school helps students to develop qualities as learners and leaders that will serve them well throughout their adult lives such as: resilience, empathy, creativity, commitment, adaptability, self-confidence, and humility.

A great school helps students to acquire transferable skills like teamwork, analysis, problem-solving, effective communication, evaluation, active listening, reflection and research; and, just as importantly, it helps students to shape and consolidate core values such as tolerance, integrity, altruism and hard work. KISU is such a school.
A walk around KISU

The director says: "You tour our school with me, we will see animated, engaged learners; many will be working collaboratively, exchanging views and opinions and testing theories. As we listen at classroom doors, we will hear students asking as many questions as they answer, students taking risks and wondering out loud in their quest for greater and deeper understanding."

"As we continue, we will be aware of the energetic buzz coming from each classroom; we will notice how rarely the teachers are to be seen talking to students from the front of the classroom- they seem more commonly to be found working with groups, pairs or individuals, listening to their ideas and guiding their learning by asking them to refine or clarify or evaluate their approaches."
"When we talk to students about their work, we will find them enthusiastic, even impassioned, about their learning; we will be struck by how clearly they seem to understand their learning goals and the purpose behind the activities they are engaged in. And these activities seem to be requiring them to explore, to inquire, to hypothesise, to evaluate, to analyse and to create"

THE CURRICULUM

Early Years Programme

Here the children follow the English National Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage, a carefully structured, relevant, and child-centered curriculum, covering six areas of learning:
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development;
  • Communication, Language, and Literacy;
  • Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy;
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World;
  • Physical Development and
  • Creative Development.
Well-planned play at KISU is a key way in which children learn whilst enjoying themselves and feeling challenged. Computer skills are introduced at this very young age.

Primary Programme

Students undertake a modified version of The National Curriculum for England and are taught in small class sizes in mixed ability groups in Key Stage (KS) 1 (Years 1-2) and KS 2 (Years 3-6). A strong emphasis is placed on Reading, Writing and Mathematics, whilst specialist teachers teach Music, Art, Drama, and French through resource based modern methods of teaching.

Secondary Programme

Students continue to study a modified National Curriculum for England in KS 3 (Years 7-9). A Francophone programme is also available at this level. Students are offered IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) in Years 10 & 11 and the IB Diploma Programme in Years 12 & 13.

The IB Programme

The IB diploma Programme fully complements KISU’s goals and purposes, KISU’s traditional curricular and cross-curricular elements, service philosophies, and practices. Learning is enhanced through cross-curricular projects, development of research skills, an awareness of environmental issues, and cultural diversity.

KISU also provides Special Educational Needs (SEN), EAL (English as an Additional Language), and Career/ University Guidance.

THE STUDENT DEVELOPMENT AND WELFARE

The school has a rich resource in the nature and diversity of its students. However, the suitability of the school for each student is assessed upon entry, to ensure that KISU can meet their needs.
All students from Year 3 (7 years old) upwards spend time on outdoor education trips, staying overnight for varying lengths of time; each student swims once a week and takes part in all activities.
The school is able to provide for students with mild learning difficulties.

Students must have a degree of fluency in English to enter Year 9. ESL/ESOL provision can be given before this year.
Students have to demonstrate their suitability for the IB Diploma Programme, through IGCSE examination results or equivalent

Mind Games. Just Who Is In Charge? ~ Diaries!

My Diaries 1. Author: Bree.K From my diaries, about Mind Games, and how the modern gal and the modern dude wanna control each other... Let me get this right, so what’s bae? Is it an acronym that stands for ‘ before anyone else ’ or the shortened version for baby or babe? (according to google). This word lost meaning to me after my last encounter in a  situation-ship , lol, let me just say the last encounter with a guy I shared most of my teenage memories with. (You know those stupid happy lovey lovey moments, when you are this hot high school gal, that every Tom, Dick & Harry is yearning for?) Story for another day... to be continued ... Back to mind games and I stand to be corrected; I don’t think anyone in my generation still believes in marriage...(Can't believe I just said that) Dating has to be the sweet-bitter experience, yes we hang out, take selfies with the magic selfie-stick, post them on instagram, create love stories with them on  snap chat ,...

Listen to Them If You Have To, But Be Sober!!

A Happy Family! "...I will do all I can to keep my family intact.." a colleague once told me . So on this day we are out for lunch, me paying for a promise of lunch. As we discuss other issues, this topic of recent rise in cases of domestic violence and marriage break- ups, comes up. Several marriages are breaking up at a supersonic speed and the main course being one. Mpango Wa Kando (Side Chic/dude), .. A story is told of a friend who swore never to get married again after she found out that her man, her husband a believer had been keeping a side chic for the 2 years of their marriage. That must be painful eh?! On confrontation, the man blames the chic for tempting and seducing him.. (this must be the joke of the year). Listening to my colleague narrate the story as she curses and swears to do all she can in her powers to keep her marriage intact, I suddenly get lost in my wonder world wondering what is becoming of the institution of marriage. Just why can...
